Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) Inkstone:

Title: Japanese Calligraphy Tankeiken 'Duanshi' Inkstone. "Suzuri Sumi". Ca: 18/19th C.

Overview: A amazing 18th to 19th century Japanese Scholar’s ‘Tankeiken’ (Duanshi) Inkstone, used for grinding and containment of ink, a rectangular shaped mortar, one side of the stone created for grinding traditional Sumi inksticks, while the other side used as an ink reservoir.
xxx Stones of this type were typically produced in the city of Zhaoqing, in the Guangdong Province of China, and were imported into Japan from as early as the 9th century. Tankeiken stone, was named after the old name for the Xi River around Zhaoqing.
Description: The inkstone is beautifully hand-carved with exacting detail, and presented in a well-fitted ‘Dovetail’ wood frame box. The specific motif is typical of the period, which reveals an almost humorous aspect of an auspicious fire-breathing Dragon depicted in a vivid scene rampantly chasing a pearl amidst swirling clouds set below a full moon, surrounded by an open sky, represented in a highly detailed cross-hatched pattern.
xxx Objects of this type would be found on a Japanese scholar’s desktop for the creation of calligraphy style art, but also to marvel at, a carving that challenges the handler to admire and wonder how the craftsman was able to manipulate the carving tools so accurately was enchanting.
