Rare solid gold coin called "Cavalier d'or" or "franc à cheval" or "florin d'or", from Duchy of Brittany, period of Duke François I (1442-1450) or Duke François II (1458-1488) ) 15th century.
This piece is in good general condition, in its own juice.
On the obverse: "*FRANCISCVS* DEI* GRACIA* - BRITON* DVX R*" (PUNCTUATION BY TWO SUPERIMPOSED STARS). Description: Duke galloping right, with crowned helm, in armour, brandishing sword in right hand and holding ermine shield in left; the horse's caparison is adorned with ermine. Translation: Francis, by the grace of God, Duke of the Bretons.
On the reverse: "*DEVS* IN* ADIVTORIVM* MEVM* IN* TANDE* R*", (PUNCTUATION BY TWO SUPERIMPOSED STARS). Description: Leafy and trefoil cross with polylobed heart, flanked by four flecks of ermine in an angled ogival polylobe. Translation: God help me.
