This type of lock was made to stop it being opened by picking and gunpowder blast
in 1851 hobbs picked a chubb lock at the great exhibition
so chubb made this type of lock to stop this from happening again
this lock was fitted with a extra lever and a barrel and curtain
the curtain has the words
4567 mortise
The lock has a extra steel ring to capture the gunpowder when poured in through the keyway
stopping the whole of the inside filling up with powder
then there are holes in the backplate to dissipate the blast
you can see this lock has chubbs standard overlift detector mechanism
and false notches in the levers
The lock has a comb steel spring
one of the comb spring tooth has broken overtime
there are seven brass levers in this lock
the lock was removed by myself from a single skin safe
made to be bricked into a wall a method used in the old times for fire protection
1861
Queen Victoria was on the throne here in Great Britain
Abraham Lincoln was 16th president of the united states
Napoleon 3rd was emperor of France
this lock and key would be a great asset to any lock collection
but should be in a museum
