Detailed information:

Gröbming

is a market town in the Liezen district, in the Austrian state of Styria. Since this district is very large in terms of area, a political branch has been set up in Gröbming (Politische Branch Gröbming).

The market town of Gröbming covers 6,691 hectares and borders, among other things, the federal state of Upper Austria on its north side. The market itself is located at an altitude of 776 m. There were at the last census  2497 people identified.

geography

Gröbming is located on a plateau in the Ennstal, bordered by the mountains Kammspitze and Stoderzinken. At Stoderzinken there is a small ski area and the well-known Stoderkircherl (also called the “Peace Church”).

Gröbming is a climatic health resort in the Gröbminger Land tourist region. the Dachstein-Tauern region.

Story

It is known that the Romans were already in this area (Römerstein in the Catholic church, Sölkpass), later the region was settled by Slavs and Bavarians (700 - 1000). The first farms are documented in the 11th century. century

In 1994, Gröbming celebrated its 900th anniversary and the handover of the municipal coat of arms. The mighty late Gothic church was consecrated in 1500. What is particularly worth seeing is the Gothic winged altar, which is usually referred to as the “Apostle Altar”. It is the largest of all preserved winged altars in Styria.

During the Reformation, Gröbming was a small refuge for Martin Luther's followers. The Protestant church was built in 1850, it is the oldest in Styria, the altarpiece depicting Christ the Resurrected was a gift from Emperor Wilhelm of Prussia.

Gröbming has long had uncertificated market rights, which is why there was a market judge until 1848, who was replaced by the first mayor. At the turn of the century, Baron Horstig began summer tourism in Gröbming - Stoderzinken. In 1902 Peter Rosegger visited Baron Horstig at Stoderzinken; The Stoderkircherl was also built around this time.

The Gröbming cheese dairy was also founded in 1902 and continues to produce excellent cheeses from the best Alpine milk to this day. During the 2nd The market was home to the Second World War  thousands of refugees. The South Tyrolean settlement still reminds us of this today.

At the beginning of the 1960s, the Stoderzinken was opened up for winter tourism with lifts. In recent decades, Gröbming has developed into an administrative, business and school town as well as the center of the Gröbming region.
