Angelo Giovanni Roncalli, der als Papst den Namen Johannes XXIII. wählte, kam am 25. November 1881 in Sotto il Monte (Bergamo) zur Welt. Im Jahre 1904 zum Priester geweiht, war Roncalli in der Verwaltung der katholischen Kirche tätig, bevor er 1925 zum Erzbischof ernannt und im diplomatischen Dienst des Heiligen Stuhls in die Balkanländer entsandt wurde. 1953 wurde er zum Kardinal und Patriarchen von Venedig erhoben. Im Alter von 77 Jahren wurde Roncalli am 28. Oktober 1958 zum Papst gewählt.

Der Name Johannes XXIII. steht für die Öffnung der katholischen Kirche zur Welt: der Papst gründete das Sekretariat für die Einheit der Christen, ernannte etliche nicht italienische Kardinäle und berief das 2. Vatikanische Konzil ein, das den Dialog der katholischen Kirche mit den zeitgenössischen Denkströmungen eröffnen und eine Reihe von innerkirchlichen Reformen einleiten sollte. Nach dem Tode Papst Johannes XXIII. am 3. Juni 1963 in Rom setzte Papst Paul VI. das Werk seines Vorgängers fort.
