NGK Racing Spark Plugs

From professional racers with extremely modified engines to the weekend warrior, all levels of performance enthusiasts can rely on the advanced technology that's built into all NGK Racing spark plugs. They can be found in virtually every any pit-lane around the globe, and with a proven track record, they're a winning solution with unbeatable reliability and performance.

To withstand the harshest of conditions that occur in the most powerful, high-compression racing engines, NGK Racing spark plugs differ from normal spark plugs in both appearance, materials and performance. These premium spark plugs feature precious metal electrodes such as platinum or gold/palladium for greater durability and the lower voltage requirements means starting an engine from cold is easier.

What to Look for When Choosing a Racing Plug

  • Shell design - To determine what kind of shell design fits in your engine, check the serial number of regulation plugs or the plugs you are currently using to verify the thread diameter, pitch, thread length and shell seat.
  • Firing End design - Refer to the section below on electrode design to determine which type is best for your needs.
  • Heat range - It's important to choose a racing plug with a heat range that keeps the electrode at an optimum temperature under even the most torturous racing conditions. Remember; A higher heat-range number does not improve engine performance; it increases the plug's ability to dissipate heat.
  • Resistors - Due to advances in ignition-system technology, there is little if any difference in performance between plugs with resistors and those without. However, there are still some variations of some models that require plugs with resistors to avoid engine trouble.

Choosing an Electrode Design

Although a good rule of thumb is that the more an electrode projects into the cylinder, the better ignition it provides, it's also true that longer projections are more susceptible to the wear and tear of extreme temperatures. High-power, high-performance engines, of course, not only run hotter, they also vibrate more, which is why we recommend choosing a firing end design that reduces exposure of the electrode and insulator as much as possible. See below for the different designs available:

Projected Type

Quite similar to a standard spark plug electrode configuration, these plugs give good overall performance in lightly tuned and naturally aspirated engines, as well as good performance in the low to medium torque range in turbo engines.

Angled Ground Strap Type

These provide superior performance in turbocharged engines with power boosts of 50% or more. The short ground electrode is also highly durable against mechanical shock.

Semi-surface Discharge Type

In a sense, this is the ultimate plug configuration. Nearly all insulator cracking and electrode melting can be prevented with this type.
Nevertheless, service life and low-speed performance may suffer slightly.

IMPORTANT - WARNING

** DO NOT USE ANTI-SEIZE LUBRICANT SUCH AS COPPER SLIP ON THE THREADS WHEN FITTING THESE SPARK PLUGS **

Using such thread lubricants can result in over-torqued values by up to 20-25%. Torque wrench readings are rendered completely inaccurate and can result in major damage to the engines cylinder head, or sheer the spark plug threads. Virtually all modern spark plugs feature a special zinc-chromate shell plating which provides corrosion resistance to the elements, so no thread lubricant is required.

Shown below is an over torqued spark plug that sheered due to user installation error. NGK states that incorrect torque values are responsible for up to 90% of all spark plug warranty claims. Incorrect torque can also result in poor engine performance, read below:

    • Under-torqued spark plugs do not make full contact with the cylinder head which reduces the plug’s ability to transfer heat out of the combustion chamber, this results in elevated combustion temperatures and as such can cause pre-ignition and detonation. These two conditions can lead to engine damage. Evidence of under-torqueing can be seen via the crush washer gasket not being as thin as expected (unless it's a tapered type plug).
    • Over-torqued spark plugs can cause stress to the metal shell, leading to thread breakage (sheer) as shown in the image below. Over tightening can also compromise the plug’s internal gas seal or even cause a hairline fracture to the insulator. Evidence of over torque is easy to spot, for example hex swelling is visible and usually the crush washer is thinner than expected. If the thread has sheered the breakage will look similar to the spark plug image shown below.
    • It's advisable to use a good quality, calibration certified torque-wrench. Users should always wind down their torque-wrench to the minimum scale setting and never all the way down after each use. A fully loaded torque wrench left in storage for a long period of time can cause a 'set' in the spring and weaken it. The result can be an inaccurate torque reading.
    • Care must also be taken to ensure the spark plug socket is not slanted at an angle as this can put pressure on the ceramic insulator causing it to crack.

      Installation Notes

      • Compressed air should be used to clean the area around the existing spark plugs before removal. Torqueing the new spark plugs up against any form of debris and build-up in the threads may prevent the plugs from making full contact with the cylinder head, even if a torque wrench indicates otherwise. This can cause poor heat dissipation which leads to higher cylinder temperatures, possibly causing pre-ignition or detonation.
      • On vehicles where positioning a torque wrench is difficult or impossible, finger tighten the plugs first and then follow the rotational guide shown on the NGK packaging with a standard wrench.
      • If the engine design means it's difficult to fit or remove spark plugs (or even see them), the plug wrench may tilt off-axis or slip. If the socket slips on the plugs hex and the inside wall of it strikes the ribbing on the plug's insulator, or its terminal, the insulator may break.
      • Some new spark plugs feature a washer gasket that is designed to be crushed during the last stages of tightening. This will feel different to tightening any normal bolt or nut up.
      • Only use a spark plug gapping tool which pulls on the ground electrodes neck to adjust the gap on precious metal spark plugs.
      • The only time anti-seize compound should be used is on vintage spark plugs that do not feature a specialised coating.
