This is an action game in which the player controls and fights a huge, highly mobile humanoid robot called an 

"Orbital Frame" that can be boarded

by humans. The character design and storyline were created with a strong awareness of Japanese science fiction

 robot animation (especially so-called "real robot" works such as "Mobile Suit Gundam"). 

Even before the game (the first game) was released, it was decided to produce an anime work with the same

 worldview, and a media mix strategy was implemented to allow a deeper experience of Z.O.E. by watching both the

 game and the anime at the same time. (Two anime works were produced: an OVA and an animated television series.

 The staff was produced by Hideo Kojima, who worked on the "Metal Gear Series" (MGS series), and the main

 character's Orbital Frame was designed by Yoji Shinkawa, who also worked on the MGS series.

 (The storyline has a connection with the MGS series. (The story has basically no connection to MGS.)
