A unique bound volume of Harper’s Weekly from July to September 1902. Hardcover bound with leather spine. Illustrated, with several large pullout plates, three of which are colored. With great historical references, including images of President Theodore / Teddy Roosevelt, the building of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Aswan Dam, author Mark Twain, UK Prime Minister Arthur Balfour, Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles Schwab, Cornelius Vanderbilt III, and more. Many illustrated updates on the unique uses of automobiles (including the use of cars to play polo). Great Art Nouveau style ads throughout. Features installments of Anthony Hope’s story The Intrusions of Peggy. In effect, this is a volume is a first edition of Hope’s book.

This book is oddly labeled 1898 on the spine. This is because the headline on the first page is “Santiago - July 3, 1898,” but the date of the issue is actually July 5, 1902. In addition, the last few pages of the bound volume are from the Comment section from the first issue, July 5th. Otherwise, weekly issues are in order from July to September.

The color plates are “Finish of the Fourth of July Handicap Race,” “Summer Amusements on an Ocean Steamer” and “The Blacksmith’s Noon Hour” (two boys fighting in the street while several men look on).

In good condition. Some wear along the edges, but the binding is tight. One large folded black and white pullout of a ship incident has a tear along the top edge. Otherwise pages are in very good shape with only a couple foxing spots (if you can find them). Front cover has lovely pattern of fading as if lace was on top of the book on a window sill. See images for details.
