Курчатовский институт сыграл ключевую роль в обеспечении безопасности страны и развитии важнейших стратегических направлений российской советской науки и промышленности. Институт был основан в Москве в 1943 году как Лаборатория № 2 Академии наук СССР для решения задачи создания атомного оружия. В 1960 году институту было присвоено имя его основателя И.В. Курчатова, а в 1991 году он получил статус Российского научного центра.

The Kurchatov Institute is the largest Russian scientific research institute.
The Kurchatov Institute played a key role in promotion of the country's safety and development of the most important strategic directions of Russian Soviet science and industry. The Institute was founded in Moscow in 1943 as Laboratory No. 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences with the view of tackling the problem of development of atomic weapons. In 1960, the Institute was named after its founder Igor Kurchatov, and in 1991, it received the status of the Russian Research Center.
