Voron 2.4 STEP 7: Afterburner & Hotend Dragonfly BMO



This seventh step for the construction of your Voron 2.4 r2 consists of the components for assembling the extruder and the hot end. The Voron 2.4 DHM kit has the Afterburner as the default extruder group with the original Bondtech gears. The Afterburner head consists of 3 main parts:




  1. The Clockwork, a direct drive extruder with dual drive gears,

  2. The hot-end group, which can be customized according to the type of hot-end used,

  3. The cooling group which by default provides a cover with 2 fans, one axial and one radial.



The 3 blocks are then coupled to the carriage of the linear guide along the X axis.



It is a very compact and solid extruder unit of the direct drive type which, thanks to its conformation, can travel at a sustained working speed.



Different types of hotends can be mounted. We offer in this variant the Dragonfly BMO (Phaetus) hot end – for those who want an entry level hot end, but which still gives satisfaction. It allows you to print many materials including PLA, PETG, ABS, loaded, thanks also to the wide range of nozzles that can be used.



 



What are the characteristics of this STEP 7?




  • Afterburner (Direct drive): We prefer the Direct Drive system (compared to the bowden) as it allows us to print a wider range of materials (including flexible). The Afterburner print head, despite being a direct drive system, allows great speeds and accelerations during the job. This is mainly due to the extreme compactness of the block.

  • Extruder (drive system) BMG - Bondtech mini geared: Original Bondtech® parts set with CNC machined nickel-plated hardened steel drive gears. Super sharp teeth for maximum grip on the filament. The Bondtech BMG® with precision gearing and an internal gear ratio of 3:1 allows large torque and compact power for all your applications. Whether you need high-resolution prints with small nozzles or high-flow prints with large nozzles, the optimized gear ratio, combined with the drive gears, ensures precision and provides unmatched pushing power and lightning-fast retracts. Furthermore, Bondtech's Dual-Drive technology ensures an uninterrupted flow of material even under the toughest conditions. This allows you to use many materials of different textures: from "slippery" nylon to soft TPU, up to high-strength filaments such as carbon-filled ones.

  • Hot end (fuser): Dragonfly BMO (Phaetus) equipped with heating cartridge, thermistor and nozzle, ready to print. Additional replacement nozzles can be included in the kit.



 



Note for assembly




  • As explained above, the Afterburner consists of 3 basic parts (driver, fuser and fans) that can be combined and interchangeable, so you can customize your extruder according to your printing needs. However, attention must be paid to the various assembly steps. There is a precise order for assembling and disassembling the entire block, so we invite you to carefully follow the attached manual.

  • In particular, attention must be paid to the orientation of the fan, motor and hot-end cables as they must respect a precise positioning in order to be able to pass between the plastic components that support them and then be blocked to the side.

  • We include the brass dowels in the kit to be inserted in the plastics, pay attention to mount them perpendicular to the molded pieces and check their effective grip after installation. The Afterburner is an essential component for printing and at the same time complex, the various parts that compose it (some very small pieces) must fit together and hook up perfectly so care and precision during assembly are a must.

  • The plastics are not included by default but can be selected as an option. For this part of the printer where temperatures and mechanical stress are high, we strongly recommend opting for Nylon-Carbon which will give you guarantees in terms of wear and durability.

  • As for the Afterburner cables that will remain "flying" when assembling this step, it will be possible to reorder them in the next step. In fact you will be able to receive and install the Duet3D 1LC toolboard, which being positioned directly on the Afterburner allows a cleaner and simpler management of the cables: this provides a bus connection with the motherboard through a single cable.

  • It will also be possible at a later time and according to your needs to integrate various mods for the fans, which allow for more massive cooling compared to the standard configuration. This is especially useful when high-flow printing is to be done. These mods will be even easier to install precisely due to the conformation of the block in 3 interchangeable parts.



 



Voron 2.4: an introduction



The Voron 2.4 model is a CoreXY motionless flatbed 3D printer design by Voron Design. This printer is known for its reliability and high performance.



Staying true to the fundamentals of the RepRap project, Voron 2.4 is completely open-source, customizable and self-buildable.



Voron 2.4 DHM kits arise from the need to collect the various requests of our customers: from those who struggle to find the material to those who have highlighted gaps and critical points in the kits already available on the market. DHM kits are born from our experience in the 3D printing sector and from the knowledge of quality manufacturers. Furthermore, thanks to our internal workshop we have created customized components by making improvements to the project to give reliability and optimal performance.



Voron 2.4 DHM kits are currently available in 3 main variants differing only in the size of the build space:

There is the possibility of some customizations in some steps of the kit, such as for example the choice of the extruder or the choice of the control board.
