African Wooden Ibibio Puppet Sculpture - NIGERIA - Custom Base 20”x 6”.



Old, imposing wooden Puppet figure from the Ibibio people of Nigeria. Typical elaborate, triparate hairdo, with moveable arms. Hand carved, with black painted details and highlights throughout, possibly depicting a leopard loincloth? Eyes are painted in white, which is typical of Ibibio sculpture and masks. Arms fit tightly into the carved sockets, with remnants of old fabric present. Nice patina of age, with some encrustation. Chips and cracks throughout, with the biggest loss to the back hairdo, which a previous owner had touched up with paint. Stable, shallow termite damage throughout. Mounted on an old painted wood block stand. Removable from stand. Repair made to proper left horn.
