A scarcely printed and unique folio variant
of “The Book of Common Prayer.” This 1904 authorized first American edition of
the prayer book of King Edward VII, outlines the Church of England’s order of
rituals, rites, ceremonies, as well as the administration of the sacraments.
Additionally, the Psalms of David are included in a format designed to
accommodate corporate song.
This edition was published under a joint
arrangement involving the Essex House Press, the Guild of Handicraft, and M.
Walter Dunne of New York. With intricate designs and typography by Charles
Robert Ashbee, the book includes blue silk moiré endpapers, a woodcut
frontispiece, title page with a woodcut border, historiated headpieces,
initials, and illustrated tables. Printed in red and black throughout, it
offers a visually stunning representation of the Church of England’s religious text.
