This is a Black Obsidian Penguin purchased in England in 1974.

The obsidian penguin is a talisman used to sooth anxiety and stress.

This one has a particularly charming face. It's also more detailed than most others, with engraving down to the toes.

It is 2 1/3" high, 1 1/3" deep and 1 5/8" wide.

Other obsidian penguins have rough bibs only. The rough surface on this one extends from the feet, up the bib and neck, up the face and around the eyes.

He also has highly-polished eyes which, I assume, are also obsidian.

This penguin in plainly hand-carved, but with great skill.

There is a maker's mark on the bottom but it's too faint to make out.

There are also some etched symbols on the bottom of the outside edge; I can't make them out but the last two look like '70'; it may have been made in 1970.

It's in mint condition.
