Superior Cabinet Corp. Elaborate Hand-Carved Secretary Cabinet with Prohibition Era Liquor Storage & Radio

  • This beautiful one-of-a-kind piece was custom built by the Superior Cabinet Corporation sometime between 1925 and 1929. It possesses multiple incredible features, including two secret storage compartments in the back, very likely used to store liquor during prohibition, a period correct and professionally serviced Stromberg-Carlson 642-A radio, and a lighted secretary desk.
  • The cabinet features various exotic wood veneers as well multiple carvings including two lute playing figures on the front corners and two faces; one on the top and one on the bottom as shown. It also possesses two etched glass doors. It is clearly evident that the manufacturer put much creativity and care into the creation of this cabinet; it's a truly special piece.
  • The exterior of the cabinet was refurbished by Meeting House Furniture Restoration in Quechee, Vermont.
  • The cabinet came into our possession missing it's original radio chassis and speaker. We chose to install a 1929 Stromberg-Carlson 642-A radio chassis and speaker, professionally serviced and equipped with Bluetooth by Golden Age Radios in Topsfield, Massachusetts. The service work done includes the following:
-   Replaced paper and electrolytic capacitors.
-   Repaired or replaced any other components needed to make the radio operational including the power cord, lamps, resistors, and the interstage transformer.
-   Aligned unit to factory specifications.
-   Installed internal safety fuse.
-   Removed old leather surround on speaker and replaced with new cloth accordion style surround and aligned cone.
  • Bluetooth was added without any modification to the chassis itself with the help of the original 1/4" high/low level switchable input jack located on the back of the chassis. The Bluetooth receiver, Bluetooth pre-amplifier, and a small power strip are all concealed in a box in the speaker chamber as shown in pictures #22 and #23.
  • The video demonstrates the wireless Bluetooth technology in action (Note: the music heard in the video is an actual recording of the radio playing a Bluetooth signal).
  • The secretary desk houses six drawers and a pull-out platform in the middle of the two drawer columns. The original light fixture is still present and is connected to an on/off switch disguised as a door catch, the operation of which can be seen in the video.
  • Overall Cabinet Dimensions: 60-3/4" high x 46-1/2" wide x 21" deep
  • Note: This cabinet can be shipped via motor freight. Please contact us for details.
