The book is signed and inscribed by the author on the first flyleaf page. 

The copyright page lists a 1940 copyright, but it's impossible to know the exact year the book was printed because Grosset & Dunlap didn't include edition information in their books at the time. The book must have been printed and signed before 1954 because the author died in 1953.

The dust jacket has some small tears, chipping, soiling, and other cosmetic wear as shown in the pictures.  There's a book plate on the inside front cover.  Other than the author's inscription, there's no writing, underlining, etc. on the pages.  The pages show some browning due to age.  Please check the listing photos to see the condition of the item you'll receive.
