Following the release of Painting and Calligraphy on the Fan
Souvenir Sheets on January 13, 2016, the Post continues the series by
issuing a souvenir sheet, featuring "Traveler at Shanyin County" on the
fan by Lan Ying, a painter of Ming dynasty. The artwork is housed at the
National Museum of History.
Lan Ying was a master in landscapes, flowers and bamboos, and human
figures. In addition to Huang Gongwang, he also drew his inspiration
from literati painters of Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties. This explains
the splendid "old master" lineage in his works. Lan was the last of the
professional painters working in the tradition of the Zhe School. The
ink painting on the fan boasts extremely polished brushwork and
exquisite composition: a few thatched houses are dispersed in the
forested mountain, and a lone figure leisurely boats on a small river.
The stamp on the souvenir sheet is fan-shaped.
