I'm offering today an adorable composition and cloth body baby doll from Horsman, circa 1930's era.  The back of the dolls neck is simply hallmarked:  "Horsman" in raised letters on the composition neck.  There is no name on her, so I'm not sure who she is.  She's absolutely adorable and in good condition.  Composition head, arms and legs on linen body which does show her age.  The head can be moved from side to side.  The arms and legs are attached to the antique muslin body which I do believe is stuffed with thick cotton.

I will start at the top of her head and work my way down so as not to omit anything in my description.  Starting at the top of her head, she has molded hair which is painted a dark brown color.  There is a curl which swoops down onto her forehead.  There are a few tiny spots on top of her head which may be paint flecks.  I did not try to remove them for fear of harming the integrity of the dolls paint.  The composition is very nice on this doll with very little problems to the paint.  There is one tiny spot on her forehead which has a tiny crack.  I've taken a photo for you to review.  It's very small and does not detract from her face in any way. We must remember, this doll was made in the 1930's, so she's almost 100 years old, therefore, she's not going to be perfect.  I'll let her mommy decide how perfect she is.  She is wearing an adorable white Christening gown with matching white bonnet.  She has adorable blue eyes which are "flirty" eyes.  When you move her one way, they will move from side to side.  For some reason, her eyes no longer close, so they are stationary in that regard.  She has her original thick brown eyelashes.  She has a dainty little nose with open nostrils for realism which flows down to her rose bud shape lips. Her lips are painted a bright red color, which stand out against those big blue eyes.  Her chubby baby cheeks have beautiful pink coloring.  Her body of linen has turned a dark color from years of being loved or stored and forgotten about.  The cry box obviously no longer works.  The doll has no odors and I try very hard to keep a clean, tidy home.

As most of you who follow me know, I pick their outfits based upon the way their faces look and what they speak to my heart.  With this precious face and dark brown hair, I knew she had to be in something very delicate and would touch at the heart strings of so many baby doll lovers.  I purchased this vintage Christening gown and I thought it would look perfect on her.  The bodice is high waist which is decorated with delicate white lace and faux white seed pearls.  The fabric feels like bridal fabric with lots of fullness and stiffness.  The collar is trimmed with white lace and comes up high around the neck.  As you go around to the back side of the gown, there are three white buttons which keep the gown in place.  The sleeves are Cinderella style which come down to her elbows. The skirt on the gown is gathered tightly for lots of fullness and ruffles.  The over skirt on the gown is done in delicate sheer white fabric with embroidered flowers flowing over the entire surface of the fabric.  There are sequins which give a little shimmer when the light hits them a certain way.  The gown is lined with white satin fabric with thick, stiff white tulle netting for added fullness.  There are white satin and sheer white ribbon which flow down the front of the gown.  Her bonnet is made from the same fabric with sheer ruffle trim around the brim.  I added a large white stain bow off to one side, which really enhances her adorable face.  She is wearing white cotton pantaloons with white handmade booties.  I put wide white satin ribbon through each booty and tied a large bow on each foot.  She looks adorable and just waiting for her new mommy to bring her home.  It's hard to believe this doll is almost 100 years old.

My dolls are not played with by children who come and visit; I know that sounds mean, but sometimes they play too rough.  My dolls are kept in a doll room specifically for them and are displayed for everyone to enjoy.  All my dolls are truly loved and cared for as though they were my children.  Their clothes are either original to the doll, made by me, or I've tried finding doll clothing from the same era as the doll or find clothing which match the personality of the doll.  We do not smoke and I try very hard to keep a tidy clean home free of dust and odor.  My dolls are clean and most of the time look as though they did when they were sold new.   Depending on how old they are, I do try to be honest in detailing if some of the dolls have bruises, missing toes or fingers or other issues, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth having; for each one is like children.....they are all beautiful in their mothers eyes.  If I've missed something it would never be intentional.

SIZE:

This is a nice size antique composition baby doll measuring approximately 22".

CONDITION:

This is an old doll and will not be perfect.  It is my opinion after many years of collecting dolls, she's in good condition. Her body does show it's age with darkening of the linen fabric.  The cry box no longer works.  It remains free of odors.  She has flirty eyes, which move from side to side, but they do not close when you lay her down. She has very little damage to the composition and the paint remains quite lovely.   As I mentioned above, there are a few tiny spots of what look to be paint on top of her head and a small tiny crack on her forehead.  I don't find anything serious to disclose. Her vintage Christening gown is in very good condition and looks beautiful on her.  Her booties are handmade for her and have not been worn by another doll.  There is very little paint loss to the composition on this doll.  Please view complete set of photos for thorough description.  I hope you can take a few minutes to look at my other dolls.  God bless you.  Connie
