Gustav Fr. Von der Loo, born in Antwerp/Belgium in 1911, has been buried in the cemetery of Salettes in the Drôme since 1996.
Pupil of the painter Marten Von der Loo, his father and his uncle, the sculptor Floris de Cuijper.
At the same time, musical studies: Winner of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, he was also a musician (violist soloist) of international quality.
This probably explains his art of transparencies, harmonies of shapes and colors. Suspended in a poetic space, shapes slide over each other, freeing up openings for the eye and the mind.
In other monumental canvases, c. Loo goes beyond this fluidity to fix forms that have the value of sculptural emblems. There he combines the elementary force by the robustness of the volume, and the delicacy by the bath in which these compositions rest.
All his paintings appear as different aspects of the same world. This world is that of native light, around an object, a form. He is the painter of the molecular abyss, where spirit and matter are one, because united in strength.
Quite rightly, a Belgian art critic wrote that it is “thanks to sensitized light that this painting enters the domain of the Flemish fantastic”.
V. Loo did not give titles to these tables in order to avoid any connection with specific images.
The signature v. Loo XI indicates that v. der Loo is the eleventh painter in his family.
