The map includes a large inset that shows"Map of the Gold Region California, which comprises most of California. There are numerous routes to California shown, from eastern seaboard ports and New Orleans to Mexico and the Isthmus then up the west coast to San Francisco. Internally the map is quite detailed, though likely not enough no navigate one's wagon across the plains, prairies and mountains. There are the latest features included, such as "Gold Regn." in California, "Mormon Sett." near Great Salt Lake. The territories of the day, Indian, Nebraska, New Mexico, Utah, and Oregon, are clearly marked with as up-to-date topography as possible, and notes on the various Indian tribes. In 1852, the California gold rush was in full swing and Americans and foreigners were traveling to the west coast overland and by ship.
