Da Ping Pu Mustard Greens are a staple in
Chinese cuisine, loved for their meaty stems, unique aromatic-bitter
taste and versatility in cooking. Da Ping Pu grows thick and wide
petioles and leaves that bunch together into compact 2-3-pound heads.
Mustard greens are grown all-year round in China due to their ability to
grow well in a wide-variety of conditions. Try stir-fried with soy
sauce and ginger, infused in noodle soups, braised with pork belly,
finely chopped with pork to stuff dumplings, or pickled to create a
tangy condiment!

Planting Instructions:
Soil Preparation:
Remove weeds, large rocks, and litter from the planting area. Till the
soil 8-10 inches deep and rake several times to break up large clods. It
is best to do this when the soil is dry enough to not stick to garden
tools. Loosening the soil will help the plant establish strong roots.
Planting:
Mustard
greens are a cool-season crop and does well in the cool temperatures of
Spring and Fall. Soil temperature should be at least 50F for seeds to
sprout. Use a hoe handle or stick to make a 1/2 inch furrow deep down
the center of the ridge. Plant 1-2 seeds in the furrows spaced 8 inches
apart within the rows. Cover lightly with loose soil then sprinkle with
water.
Planting Depth: |
1/4 inch |
Within-Row Spacing:
|
16 inches
|
Between-Row Spacing:
|
2-3 feet
|
Watering:
Water plants moderately. If the soil moisture is low, water but avoid
waterlogging soil. Try to avoid wetting foliage to prevent diseases.
Weeding: Keep plants free of weeds, which rob weak root systems of nutrients and moisture.
Insecticides:
Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Bt-based insecticides and
sulfur are organic options that can be used for prevention. Sevin is a
synthetic option. Sulfur also has fungicidal properties and helps in
controlling many diseases. Before using a pesticide, please read the
label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions.
Diseases: Disease
can happen in cloudy, damp weather. Check plants daily and treat with
an approved fungicide if diseases do appear. Neem oil, sulfur, and other
fungicides are available for use. Please always follow label
directions.
Mustard
greens can be harvested at any stage of maturity. Fully mature mustard
green leaves may be harvested when stems are full-sized and thick, about
12" in height. Cut individual outside leaves or harvest the whole head
by cutting the base at the soil level. Harvest regularly for continuous
growth.
