A rare and stunning ink and ink wash drawing strongly attributed to Hubert Robert (1733-1808)
Hubert Robert was an incomparable neoclassical landscape painter during the 
last half of the 18th Century in France. 

He was one time drawing instructor to Marie Antoinette Queen of France (1755-1793).
 His paintings and drawings are in most major collections around the world, 
especially in his native France. 
His output was immense having supposedly produced one thousand 
paintings and ten thousand drawings in his lifetime.

This drawing also bears two collection stamps. One i have been unable to identify and the other belonging to the noted early 19th century collector Christian Gottfried Matthes (d1862).  
This stamp is Lugt Number 2871

Matthes was a painter, engraver, and collector of prints and drawings. 
Educated at the academie of Berlin in 1804. His collection was sold 20 January 1862, in Berlin by Amsler & Ruthardt.

His collection included the likes of Albrecht Durer (1471-1528),
 Rembrandt (1606-1669), Giorgione (1477-1510) to name a few. 
Many are in major European Museum collections.

 This Drawing was purchased in the 1980s from Kennedy Gallery in NYC.
