This pendant is similar in design to many others crafted by French prisoners of war in England during the Napoleonic Wars. Jewels and pendants like this were made using whatever materials were available at the time, such as paper, straw and animal bones and would have been traded as souvenirs to English Masons in return for food, clothes and bedding.
