This British army recruiting poster of April 1915 offers a rare portrayal of the British countryside.

Intended as an appeal to all the home nations, a kilted Highlander gestures to the onlooker to defend what appears to be a typically English pastoral landscape.

Picturing Britain as a rural idyll probably reflected the influence of pre-war travel posters, but would have been an unfamiliar concept to many of Britain’s urban industrial classes, at whom the recruiting drive was principally directed.

A patriotic picture framed in an A4 (29.7 x 21 cm, 11.7 x 8.3 inch) size frame.
