Britain Needs You at Once

England’s patron saint, George, slaying the Dragon seemed an ideal image to promote army recruitment during the First World War.

Effectively summarising the conflict as a fight between good and evil, the same symbolism even appeared in the posters of Britain’s enemies.

Yet depictions of St George were relatively rare in British First World War recruiting propaganda as government employed publicists tended to avoid high-minded rhetoric fearing it would alienate the ordinary public.
