Vintage Sila-flex (pre-Browning) Medallion series, model MSP 70-2 rare older fly fishing rod very clean collectors rod (two pieces) with original cloth bag and metal storage tube. Rod length about 7 feet when two parts are assembled.


Sila-flex company of Costa Masa, California introduced their Medallion series in 1952. In 1962/63, Browning purchased the Sila-flex company. Rods after are marked with “Browning” name. This rod is “pre-Browning” or dated between 1952 to 1961 (60 to 70 years ago).


Rod comes disassembled in two parts, very lightweight with good metal guides, strong thread wrapped ferrules, dark spiral wraps with white trim, and a pair high grade metal reelseat on cork handle. All labels graphics on the rod are legible and in great condition. Joint between the two parts has no slips nor cracks and moves smoothly together.


In a 1956 catalog, These rods were packaged with aluminum case and cloth bag for a retail sale listing price of $60-$75. At that time, its cost was very expensive (equivalent dollar value in 2023; $677 to $845).


Cloth bag; brown felt cloth with seam separated twin pockets for each individual rod segments, top hanging loop, and vintage sila-flex embroidered label patch with specific rod model number for this sack and artisan fly fishing graphic. Very clean and great condition (no mold nor tread seam damage).


Aluminum case; anodized aluminum tube with separate thicker tread receiver top for screw cap with rubber gasket. Exterior tube surface is covered in scratches and dings from +60 years of storage/use, but maintains it structural integrity to protect rod. Screw cap with graphic company label and seal gasket are in good working order.
