Disneyland Walt Disney Photographer 1999 Renie Bardeau Main Street Window Award

Disneyland Walt Disney Photographer 1999 Renie Bardeau Main Street Window Award

Classic Disneyland Memorabilia from Saturday's Toys presents...  an original NFFC / National Fantasy Fan Club newsletter honoring Walt Disney and Disneyland Photographer Renie Bardeau (May 5, 1934 - Jan. 4, 1921)

The newsletter was released soon after Bardeau's retirement as Disneyland's Chief Photographer and Photo Archivist.  After retiring in July 1998, Bardeau returned to Main Street on March 10, 1999 for the dedication of  his own "Main Street Window" (above the Main Street Photo Supply Company; then sponsored by Kodak).  Here, Bardeau is seen holding his presentation copy of the window.

Bardeau's career at Disneyland began as a temporary summer employee in 1959 after completing his term of service in the US Navy.  In 1964, he became a full-time Disneyland cast member and in 1975 became Disneyland's Chief Photographer after serving with Charlie Nichols and Blair Clarke who previously served in the role.

The newsletter gives credit to Bardeau for the classic "Footsteps" photo of Walt Disney (passing through Sleeping Beauty Castle after Disneyland's streets had been washed early in the morning before the park opened to the public for the day).  However, that particular photo was actually part of an earlier Disneyland photo essay of Walt Disney in the park with his family (Lilly, Sharon, Diane and Ron Miller with their son, Chris) in the Fall of 1956 for advance publicity (Saturday Evening Post; Nov. 24, 1956); as related to the upcoming release of "The Walt Disney Story" by Diane Disney Miller with Pete Martin (1957).  When these Disneyland photos were completed, the group then went to the Disneyland Hotel where they were again photographed, wearing the same clothes, for an array of other publicity and magazine purposes.  In essence, the photos were taken three years before Bardeau's earliest date of employment at Disneyland.... and based on Walt's appearance in the photo... would not have been taken in 1964, as  legend currently has it.

Newsletter also includes construction photos from Disney's California Adventure... as well as of the "Tarzan" remodel of "Swiss Family Treehouse"... and the Disneyland Hotel "Neverland" construction update.

Saturday’s Toys and Collectibles was founded in 1994 by Southern California author and media historian, Dave Mason. Soon after eBay's launch the following year, Saturday's Toys was among the first online specialists to strategize in embracing this rapidly developing technology. Having delivered over 15,000 coveted treasures since that time, Saturday's Toys is pleased to partner with researchers and collectors throughout the globe.

Today, online offerings of archival keepsakes are presented in celebration of the times that allow for family, friends and neighbors to join in memorable gatherings that nurture the strong connections that bind a community together. These treasures are affectionately represented by "Saturday's Toys." In that light we present our adopted motto (with a nod to the Sherman Brothers): "Oh, let's go fly a kite!"
