5x7 inch glossy, reprinted photograph of one of the craziest races in history!  E. C. Stearns & Co. was one of the largest bicycle manufacturing companies in the country in 1896. They arranged this crazy stunt whereby a Yellow Fellow bicycle ridden by six racers would compete against the No. 999 Locomotive Engine of the New York Central Railroad.  On race day the riders awaited the appearance of the No. 999 engine and when she came into sight, the cyclists slowly and steadily got up to pace so that when the engine was nearly alongside, they were going approximately 45 mph.  The race continued for the agreed upon half mile and the Yellow Fellow won by four lengths!!! They beat the train.
