Queen Jadwiga (Jadwiga Andegaweńska) was a Polish queen who reigned in the years 1384-1399. She was born in 1373 as the daughter of Louis I of Hungary and Elizabeth of Bosnia. After the death of her father Louis of Hungary, Jadwiga was elected king of Poland at the age of 10 by the Polish Sejm in 1384. She was the first woman to be crowned King of Poland. As a result of her marriage to Władysław II Jagiełło, an alliance of Poland and Lithuania was formed, which led to the Polish-Lithuanian Union. Jadwiga was known for her love of people and charity, as well as her devotion to religion. She was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1997.
