What is Hojicha?

Hōjicha is a unique Japanese Green Tea made from roasting bancha leaves over high heat. As a result, this tea is a gorgeous brew that’s smoky in taste and amber in colour. Meaning “roasted tea” in japanese, this tea’s slightly nutty and charred tasting notes always leaves drinkers feeling content. It contains less caffeine than most green teas due to its unique roasting process. However, it still retains high amounts of the amino acid theanine. This combination works to produce the most relaxing sensations in the body. Therefore, hōjicha the ideal wind-down brew for caffeine-sensitive tea drinkers.  Hōjicha is perfect for both hot and cold brewing, its unique flavour is one that may be enjoyed as an iced tea.

The history of hōjicha is just as interesting as the brew itself. This tea is the product of the distinctively Japanese practice of letting nothing go to waste (and the innovative thinking of one Japanese merchant)! In the 1920’s, a Kyoto trader experimented with roasting leftover bancha leaves and stems over glowing charcoal to create a new tea that minimised excess waste. Hōjicha was born and is now one of the most popular teas in Japan!

Directions 

 Enjoy all day especially with meals, For the best results use fresh, filtered water. Add 1 tsp per 200ml, brew at around 80ºC or below boiling point. Only requires 30 sec - 1min min of brewing. Excellent for both hot or cold brewing.
