Roman Republic Denarius M. Caecilius Q.f. Q.n. Metellus Very Fine

Roman Republic denarius M. Caecilius Q.f. Q.n. Metellus struck at Rome 127 BC. Mark in the field below Roma’s chine, otherwise Very Fine and attractively toned.

The elephants head in the reverse design refers to the moneyer’s ancestor Caecilius Metellus victory over Hasdrubal at the battle Panormus during the second Punic war in which a number of elephants were captured and later slaughtered in the Circus Maximus in Rome. The Macedonian shield on which the elephants head is placed commemorates the victory of the moneyer’s father, Quintus Caecilius Metellus, over Andricus in 148 BC and his reorganisation of Macedonia as a Roman Province. This coin represents one of the earliest examples of a Moneyer using his coinage to celebrate the history and achievements of this family.

Obverse: Helmeted head of Roma right, ROMA behind, star below chin
Reverse: M•METELLVS•Q•F• around Macedonian shield on which there is an elephant’s head, all within laurel wreath

The Small Print:

All coins, medals and other items I sell are genuine unless I have explicitly described them as otherwise, I have been selling on eBay for over 20 years and I guarantee this forever. If I sell you something as genuine that later turns out to be a forgery I will take the item back and refund you in full including all postage costs. There are a great many groups on social media sites with experienced collectors posting coins that you can look at which will help you learn to grade coins and offer advice on whether a coin is genuine or not. Don’t get caught out by fake coins. Feel free to copy any of my images to post on groups to get opinions on the actual coins I’m selling.

I’ve made every effort to provide good quality images of the items I sell but, with coins especially, there’s no substitute for having it in hand to examine it under a lens to assess it. If you buy anything from me and are disappointed when you receive it, for any reason, send it back in the same condition as it was received and I will refund you.
