Description: Softcover. Oblong small quarto. String-tied gray card covers with "Photographs" in darker gray ink on front wrap. 89 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver images. Various sizes, mostly between 1.75" x 2.5" and 2.5" x 3.5", with some larger. Well-captioned images. Ownership "name" ("Myself") on front wrap, two images lacking (but the album is unpillaged), else near fine. Album created by a British nurse, first caring for invalided soldiers in WWI and then continuing on during her service at various private homes and public hospitals. Although the photographs are well-dated, they are not laid out strictly chronologically. The earliest seem to be devoted to her tenure at Torbay Hospital in (confusingly) Torquay in South Devon between 1917 and 1918 caring for soldiers (the current Torbay Hospital was built in 1925, so presumably this was an impromptu hospital set-up for war service). Afterwards it seems that she might have worked as a private nurse on a number of estates (Sherrington Manor and others), at Beach Hill Nursing Home in Barnstable (where she is seen holding babies), and finally ending up at Golden Square Throat Hospital in London. A good number of the pictures are of the compiler and other nurses in their uniforms, some with recovering soldiers. Others are of her traveling, in a bathing costume, and near the end in 1929 in a bridal gown. Also included are a few pictures of Golden Square Throat Hospital and its staff, as well as a few "photostrip" images of the compiler, some taken at Selfridge's. While the compiler has identified many of those in the album, she has not identified herself. A little research and some triangulation could certainly result in a possible positive identification of the compiler. A pleasing album with good quality images and which is nicely subject specific.
