Uniform burgundy cloth with gilt-ruled front boards, gilt-stamped spine titles, and top edges gilt. Some hinges and gutters cracked, faint dampstain on page edges of volume five "The Scarlet Letter", small stain on front board of volume six "The Marble Faun", light dampstain on spines of volume nine "American Note-Books" and volumes fourteen and fifteen "Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife", still a very good or better set belonging to a noted American poet with his name penned on endpapers and his penciled notations and underlinings in some of the volumes. Laid in are papers with notes and or postcards addressed to the poet.
