ALEXANDER VISITING APELLES
Apelles, the most celebrated painter of antiquity, flourished during the later part of the IVth Century B.C. He was probably born at Colophon, on the Ionian coast of Asia Minor. After completing his studies at Ephesus and Sicyon, he visited Macedon. where Alexander greatly favoured him. The picture shows the Macedonian conqueror visiting the artist in his studio for the purpose of sitting for his portrait, which only Apelles was permitted to paint.
