THIS ITEM:  Edward Samuel Ritchie began making marine navigational compasses for the U.S. Navy prior to the civil war in Boston MA.  As of 1867, the company was named E.S. Ritchie & Sons and do relocated to Brookline, MA in 1886.

This brass compass ring, model 1644 does have a marking of Ritchie, Boston, but the wooden shipping/storage case has a brass label "E.S. Ritchie & Sons  Brookline, Mass.". Actual age has not been determined, but definitely prior to 1940. It appears to be made of solid brass with a black coating on the top in which the naviagaional markings are painted. There are 4 sighting uprights that get folded down for transporting. Two wood pivots are used to hold the ring in place while transporting.

Condition:    Please use the multiple pictures to assess condition. Overall excellent with some typical minor wear. The lid and the bottom each have a crack.
