Up for sale, a 1976 Gibson Hummingbird Custom in excellent condition, finished in Wine Red and complete with the original hardshell case. A Norlin-era iteration of the Hummingbird platform, the Custom features a spruce top, mahogany back and rims, and a three-piece figured maple neck capped by a bound rosewood fingerboard. Benefitting from the servicing due a dreadnought of this vintage, this Gibson features a professional neck reset, a full refret, and a new tall carved bone saddle. Warm, punchy and powerful, this Hummingbird has tons of projection and immediate kick in the bass register, with a midrange that balances smooth growl and sweetness, and trebles that are equal parts round and sparkling. This guitar weighs 4lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 12-53 bronze strings and easy-playing action. The lightly figured three-piece maple neck has a slender C-shaped profile carve at the nut, gaining additional heft and roundness in the upper registers, measuring .830” deep at the 1st fret and .950” at the 9th. The rosewood fretboard has small block inlay, refretted with pristine medium jumbo fretwire. This guitar plays cleanly up the 25 1/2“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the modern hand-carved bone nut measures a full 1 11/16” in width. On the headstock, the Gibson-stamped Schaller-made tuning machines turn smoothly and hold accurate pitch, with clean chrome-plated keystone buttons. The stickered 00-prefix serial number dates production to '76. The neck has been professionally reset, meeting the body at an ideal angle for decades of future trouble-free use, and action at the 12th fret measures 7/64” on the bass side and 5/64” on the treble side. The rosewood bridge sits flush with the spruce top on all edges, and the new compensated bone saddle has ample height. The graphics on the original red tortoise pickguard are practically perfect. The gloss Wine Red nitro lacquer finish is an uncommon option, framed by multi-ply binding and exhibiting limited lacquer checking on the top. There is one professionally-addressed split on the treble-side lower bout rim, and a second very slight repair on top extending from the soundhole towards the bridge a short distance between the D and G strings. Cosmetic wear includes some light buckle wear on the back and a number of small nicks and light finish scratches on the body as a whole. There is light flame figuring on the neck profile, with light palm wear nearly through the gloss along the treble side edge. The original Gibson-branded black tolex hardshell case is included. The case retains its Gibson silkscreen on the lid, with functional latches and the original handle.
