One of the most important Post-Impressionist painters - even more extraordinary bearing in mind the fact that he was only 31 when he died in 1891.

His drawings in Conté crayon allowed for very subtle tonal gradation; they shimmer in a manner akin to the effect created by his ground-breaking pointillist painting technique.
