VINTAGE ARTS & CRAFTS/MISSION-STYLE/CRAFTSMAN WASTE BASKET

HAMMERED COPPER - SCALLOPED EDGE

GOOD VINTAGE CONDITION

This vintage hammered copper ARTS & CRAFTS or MISSION STYLE  waste basket, with its scalloped edge and wood base, is in good vintage  condition. It is useful and beautifully decorative and would be just right in that ARTS & CRAFTS inspired office or other room.

One of the core principals of the ARTS & CRAFTS movement was to encourage craftsmanship - pottery, embroidery, metalwork - of decorative items for the home. I’m guessing that this might have been one of those projects, crafted in a school, shop, or a club. It definitely has age to it, and indeed could be from the early part of the last century.

STATS: The waste basket measures approx. 9 1/2” at its widest by approx. 5 1/2”. Approx. 12” at its tallest height. It is constructed of four pieces of what I believe to be hammered copper (it has the patina of copper) attached to a wooden base. It is sturdy and has a nice weight to it.  A few scratches here and there and some digs in the wooden base (which could be covered over with stain if desired), but no major dents or damage. The base might be oak. No marking, but a well made and well cared for piece.

ABOUT THE ARTS & CRAFTS MOVEMENT:

The Arts and Crafts Movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles[1] and subsequently spread across the British Empire and to the rest of Europe and America.
Initiated in reaction against the perceived impoverishment of the decorative arts and the conditions in which they were produced, the movement flourished in Europe and North America between about 1880 and 1920. It is the root of the Modern Style, the British expression of what later came to be called the Art Nouveau movement, which it strongly influenced. In Japan, it emerged in the 1920s as the Mingei movement. It stood for traditional craftsmanship, and often used medieval, romantic, or folk styles of decoration. It advocated economic and social reform and was anti-industrial in its orientation. It had a strong influence on the arts in Europe until it was displaced by Modernism in the 1930s, and its influence continued among craft makers, designers, and town planners long afterwards.

This cool and unique treasure would make a wonderful addition to your Arts and Crafts or Mission decor or a thoughtful gift. It’s all in the details!

Please understand that I primarily sell vintage or antique pieces. While I try to describe any flaws accurately and to the best of my ability, remember that vintage pieces will always have imperfections – the “patina” that gives them their history and charm. If you’re looking for perfection, you may be disappointed.
