Mr. Bill Lindsey, an expert on American made bottles was kind enough to
give me the following information on this bottle on auction today.
Quotation
from Mr. Bill Lindsey:
"Having
seen more of the bottle in the eBay images you posted, I believe it is likely
European in origin and dates from the last third of the 19th century. The
shape is a bit like the Burgundy style wine bottles, though smaller than the
usual "fifth" capacity of typical wine bottles. It is also
somewhat similar to the bottles champagne (sparkling wine) came in. Both
very similar styles are covered on my Historic Bottle Website at the following
link: https://sha.org/bottle/wine.htm
I do not know what CUBIN stands for but obviously something to do with the contents or purveyor of the contents. My expertise is with American made bottles from the 18th to early 20th centuries. However, if the bottle has heavy or thick glass it could be it was used for some type of carbonated product...like champagne or soda even.
The
white, flaking staining or "patination" on the surface of the bottle
is from being long buried in (usually) alkaline soils but is also a function of
the glass batch mixture that the bottle was blown from. I cover the
subject in some depth at the following link on my educational bottle ID &
Information website: https://sha.org/bottle/body.htm#Patination"
