Offered is the original artwork for card #61 in the 1935 National Chicle "Diamond Stars" series. The subject, Billy Werber, is featured on the Boston Red Sox. Werber enjoyed a fine season that year (1934), batting .321 and leading the league with 40 stolen bases. Among his many accolades is the distinction of playing with the famed 1927 New York Yankees and the recognition of being the last surviving teammate of Babe Ruth. Werber was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1961. The National Chicle "Diamond Stars" original art remains today as some of the oldest production artwork still in existence. Nearly all what remains--an estimated 35 total subjects--briefly surfaced in the 1970s and is rarely offered for public sale today, having been ferreted away by astute collectors. The artwork itself measures approximately 4 ½ inches by 5 ¾ inches and has been applied to a thick, blank-backed illustration board. Even after 80 years, it shows virtually no signs of ageing or degradation. The colors remain bright and vivid and are comparable to that of a fresh, high-grade Diamond Star. Framed along with the original art is an autographed card of Billy Werber (EM condition, vintage blue fountain pen signature), and a Near Mint condition 1935 Diamond Star baseball card. The framing materials include museum-quality, acid free paper and matting as well as Tru Vue conservation grade, anti-glare glass with 99% UV protection. The artwork is ready to be hung and displayed. Total size: 12 ½ inches by 18 ½ inches.
