Bartold V.V. (1869-1930) - the largest Russian historian, source and Islamic scholar, whose authority was recognized both in the scientific circles of Western Europe and among the Muslim intelligentsia, the author of over 400 scientific works. Fame as an Islamic scholar Bartold owes mainly to two popular science essays, `Islam` and `Culture of Islam`, and an introductory course in the study of the history of Muslim countries and peoples - `Muslim world`; all three were published in 1918-1922. separate books. The book raises the question of the history of the Muslim world as part of world history and again touches upon the problems already considered in the two essays mentioned above. The review of the ethnic composition of the Muslim world is followed by a description of the main Arab sources and Oriental literature on the history of Islam and its culture.
