An excellent copy in in red leather and marbled papered covers with matching end papers. Spine decorative gilt stamped with titles and date, chip at top. Top edge gilt. Previous owners bookplate inside front cover, original silk bookmark. An attractive copy of the first edition of this Paris-printed English translation by Louis-Henri Le Moine, gentleman in ordinary to the King Louis XVI (1754-1793) of France, of Histoire du roy Henry le Grand (Paris, 1661) by Hardouin de Péréfixe de Beaumont (1606-1671). This account of the life of French King Henri IV (1553-1610) was one of a small number of books printed in English at the Paris press of the celebrated printer François Ambroise Didot (1730-1804), intended for use in English language study by learned French youth. The dedication by Le Moine is addressed to Louis XVI: tho this history has been your first spelling-book perhaps you will not dislike to read it again, in a language you are partial to, and which your majesty is perfect master of. Bright clean interior without markings, a few foxing spots here and there, and binding tight and square. 466 pages. 8.75" x 5.5." Extremely scarce.
