Wilde, Oscar. The Picture of Dorian Gray. Ward Lock, London 1891. First Edition, first impression.
Original publisher's grey brown paper covered boards, with gilt title and decoration to upper board. Original grey brown endpapers. Pages uncut.
Iconic design by Charles Ricketts.
Though an expensive and artistic production, the binding of the first edition has proved notoriously fragile, with the gilt titled backstrip rarely surviving. Here, as usual, it has been replaced, in this instance with faux vellum, to pleasing effect. Boards slightly scuffed, corners bumped, decoration to upper board remains bright. Neat 1891ownership inscription to verso of ffep. Internally clean and bright with no markings. Overall, in very good condition.
Misprint 'nd' on p208 as called for.
Scarce, especially so in original boards.
