The title in
Russian is “Skaska o Perishke Finista, Yasno Sokola”. This is translatable as a
“Fairy Tale of the Falcon's Feather....” and is a magical fairy tale of
impossible transformations and the labours of love, the Russian equivalent of
the Story of Psyche and Eros.
This is “Finist
the Falcon”, a Russian folk story retold in English by Irina Zheleznova in a
paperback edition printed in 1977. This edition reprints the wonderful art
nouveau illustrations done by Ivan Bilibin for the original Russian edition of
1901.
Ivan Bilibin is a
famous Russian illustrator and stage designer, who was inspired by Slavic
folklore throughout his career. He was a prominent figure in the artistic
movement Mir Iskusstva and contributed to the Ballets Russes.
