Ivan Bilibin, Illustrator

This is “Tsar Ivan Vassilyevich, his young oprichnik, and the stouthearted merchant Kalashnikov”, Mikhail Lermontov a poem retold in English by Irina Zheleznova in a cream cloth edition printed in 1983. This edition reprints the wonderful art nouveau illustrations done by Ivan Bilibin for the original Russian edition of 1941.

Ivan Bilibin is a famous Russian illustrator and stage designer, who was inspired by Slavic folklore throughout his career. He was a prominent figure in the artistic movement Mir Iskusstva and contributed to the Ballets Russes.

The plot of the poem is set during Oprichnina times. Rhythmically, Kalashnikov is patterned after bylina, the Russian folk epic. Its most famous scene describes a fistfight between the protagonists, Kalashnikov and oprichnik Kiribeevich.
