1905, Frederick Warne and Co. First American edition, first impression, the red variant paper binding with round pictorial inlay of cat to upper board. 10 colored plates and line drawings to text. The first of Potter's works to be published in a large format and the details of her engaging watercolors are even more enjoyable on this scale. The color plates are printed on one side of the quality coated paper, tipped-in paper, the other side is blank. There is some fading to the red paper wrappers and the paper on the spine is missing. There is no foxing or soiling or staining or tears or any damage to note, only one page has a gutter split but binding still strong. No previous owners name and no other markings in the book. The book has a very slight bow to it but the binding is strong and solid. Lovely illustrated decorative end papers, clean. The book is unusually fresh and clean and has an unread aspect to it which is unusual for an early first edition of Potter. 52 pages, dimensions approximately 5.5” X 7.0.”
