What is a RigB?

The RigB is a solid metal body/mount for (certain) Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges.

The name ‘RigB’ sums up what it is: A Rigid Body. (it is pronounced ‘Rigby’ as in ‘Eleanor Rigby’ the Beatles Song..)

In mounting the cartridge generator to your arm or headshell; a stable, rigid, non-resonating body is what is needed. Cartridge manufacturers have to produce a range of products and so the budget versions tend to have inexpensive plastic bodies or ‘mounts’.  Often, models higher up the range will have a metal body/mount.

Those who want the best can now choose a RigB and exchange the plastic body/mount for one precision machined from alloy.

The RigB is a precision CNC machined piece of T6 Aluminium Alloy. It has been designed and made to securely cradle the generator in its protective canister and support it with exactly the same geometry as the original plastic body.  The RigB has threaded holes (M2.5) for easy and secure mounting using socket head cap screws which are included. By making a CNC machined alloy body, we have enhanced the stability of the generator in a way normally used only in very high-end cartridges. Since any lost movement is recorded information unretrieved, the RigB allows more of what was in the groove to be relayed up the chain. There is nothing ‘magical’ in this, and we don’t claim to have invented the idea.

Indeed, Audio Technica were producing a metal bodied version of one of their MM models in the 1980’s – The Linn K9 still has a reputation for performance to this day.

As the people behind the RigB; we absolutely love Audio Technica products and have designed and made the first RigBs to fit the well-known AT models of Moving Magnet cartridges. Don’t for one moment imagine that this suggests that the Audio Technica cartridges are in some way ‘wanting’ in their design – nothing could be further from the truth.   Every well engineered, mass-produced product is a balance of compromises and, in our opinion, the guys in Japan are masters at getting it right.  But there will always be some users who are wish to have something custom engineered and bespoke that lifts a great performer a bit higher.  Anyone who decides to simply take a standard cartridge model will not be disappointed.  But the substitution of a RigB will bring out even more of the performance enabled by Audio Technica’s superb generators and stylus assemblies.

The RigB 1 itself weighs  2.44g - adding about 1.85g compared to the plastic body it replaces.  This is likely to move the resonant frequency of a typical cartridge/arm by less than 0.5Hz so there's no need to be concerned about that. An AT91 or Rega Carbon with RigB weighs a total of 6.8g - well within the range of normal cartridge weights.

The range of RigB models includes:

This RigB 1 for AT91, AT3600L and Rega Carbon

And Also (not listed here on eBay)

The RigB 9 for VM95 range cartridges

The RigB 5 for VM500/700 cartridges

The TRigB which allows VM500/700 cartridges to be fixed at three points and instantly aligned on Linn arms
