Listed is a 1980s Joe Montana team issued 49ers jersey. I have done extensive research on this jersey and am selling it as a team issued jersey possibly used in 1982 training camp. Here are the details.

Comes with a letter from AuthenticGamers.com which reads

“February 1, 2005

Joe Montana mid-1980s game worn 49ers home jersey.

This home red San Francisco 49ers jersey was worn by Joe Montana in the mid-1980s. It is tagged on the tail with a Wilson size 44 wash/size tag. This jersey exhibits good evidence of quarterback wear, including some scuffing in the body and shoulder pad area (inside and out). This jersey also comes with supporting documentation from Greg Thorpe, who obtained the jersey from a former coach at Sierra College

In my opinion, the jersey shows very little to no use so I am selling it issued, not game used/worn.

The accompanying letter reads

“Dear Rob,

Enclosed please find the Joe Montana jersey from the early 80s.

I obtained the jersey several years ago from Buzz Ostrum who was the 49ers training camp coordinator here at Sierra College since 1981 and Sierra’s coach.

The 49ers use their old jerseys at training camp and then are given to the college for the football team to wear.

The weight and label on the shirt show it to be from the early 80s.

Sincerely Greg Thorpe”

Thru the 80s the 49ers changed the fonts of their 1s and 6s. A look at the 1982 team photo taken at training camp shows different style 1s and 6s in the same photo which supports the idea mentioned in the letter that the 49ers took their old often mismatched jerseys to training camp.

I have tried to exactly photomatch Joe wearing my jersey but there are very few training camp pics from the early 80s. The 6 matches the 6 used in the 1982 team photo. I also have included photos of Dan Audick #61, who appears to have similar 1s and 6s on his jersey to the one being sold. There are also photos of Matt Cavanaugh, backup qb to Montana #6, with the same style 6 as my jersey.

The bottom line is I don’t have a photomatch, but I have a letter of provenance. Included in the auction is a program from 49ers training camp in ‘96 after Montana was there, but showing they practiced at Sierra College.

Please do your own research and be comfortable before buying. I do not accept returns. I make no guarantees about being able to get it authenticated because of the lack of photo databases of 49ers training camp in the early 80s.

Feel free to ask me any questions. Thanks for looking at my listing.
