Rare Chinese 'Guyue Xuan' Enameled Glass-Carved Snuff Bottle, Qing Court.

Title: Rare Chinese ‘Guyue Xuan’ Enameled Glass-Carved Snuff Bottle. Qing Court, Beijing 18th C.

Overview:x We are pleased to offer this exquisite Chinese hand-painted Enameled Glass Snuff Bottle, from the Qing Court, created by a master potter of the Imperial Palace workshop, beautifully decorated in an enameled colour pallet on a white ground. Imperial Chinese porcelain of this type was used by Chinese literati and scholar officials, produced of the finest quality, reflecting the Imperial taste and marked with the name of the maker at the base.

Image Details:A very well hollowed bottle of compressed globular form, with a wide mouth, concaved and inverted lip, tapering to a wide body and resting on a recessed oval foot rim, and ornamented with a pale turquoise Jade stopper. A well-carved glass bottle is impeccably decorated on both sides with a continuous scene of a pair of rampant dragons, amidst meandering clouds, hand-painted in a black enamel outline, and filled with a heavy multi-color blue overglazed enamels, on a opaque white ground. The base with concaved foot contains the three-character ‘Guyue Xuan’ mark, in Iron-red enamel. Period Make (1776-1799) Qing Dynasty. xxxxxxxx The base is inscribed in iron-red with a three-character mark “Guyue Xuan” (‘Ancient Moon Pavilion’Hall).

This bottle is an unusual example of the classic ‘Guyue Xuan’ glass enamel type. After the initial period of development of the “Wu” (Guyue Xuan)style, which evolved from the earlier Qianlong Palace workshops style, there followed a period of masterly works, confidently hand-painted with a range of decorative subjects on single-plane ware, enameled on the flat surface of the bottle. The bottle here exemplifies the single-plane style, which was produced of the highest quality of any known from China. These classic wares probably developed at some time in the 1770’s and continued until the emperors death in 1799.

25 year private USA Collection.
