RARE JOHN SHELDON SILVER POCKET TRAVELLING POSTAL LETTER SCALES BALANCE.

Yes the beautiful display box is included in the sale so it would make a stunning present or gift, all you need is wrapping paper.

This is for a lovely pristine John Sheldon Victorian pocket letter scale marked with a date lozenge for 17 th October 1845 It is a rare version the much more usual model where the engine turning is in flowers design.

John Sheldon was a great pioneer of Victorian ideas, particularly in the writing field and this is one of his great designs. When you pull the top off it reveals postal scales inside. On one side you have a clip that is housed inside the scales and flips out when the inner scale is pulled down, when it does so it is sprung to pull back up so that when you clip a letter it pulls down and gives you a reading on the side. Both the top and the bottom of the case has a plain seal matrix, and this case both are blank. It is all made in what the catalogue of the time called German silver and it has a classic all over engine turned design around the whole body. It is marked down the side 'John Sheldon' . It is in absolute excellent condition, with no dings, dents, damage or repairs anywhere and nice crisp engine turning, its not worn anywhere nor rubbed anywhere, everything works properly and the scales are sprung tightly.

When closed it measures 6.4 mm long by 8mm in diameter at the ends.
