Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a fragrant and flavourful herb known for its vibrant green leaves, distinctive aroma, and refreshing taste.

Spearmint is a low-growing perennial plant that typically reaches a height of about 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm). Its square stems are covered with bright green, serrated leaves that are lance-shaped. The leaves are often slightly fuzzy or hairy, contributing to the plant's textured appearance. The hallmark of spearmint is its invigorating aroma, which is minty, sweet, and less pungent than that of peppermint. The leaves release a refreshing scent when crushed, making spearmint a popular choice for culinary and aromatic purposes. The flavour is cool and mildly sweet, making it a versatile herb in various culinary applications.

This herb thrives especially in well-drained soil but can tolerate various soil types. For best results, choose a sunny to partially shaded location for your spearmint ensuring that the plant will receive 4 - 6 hours of sunlight a day. If you plan on sowing indoors then sow your seeds in seed-starting trays or pots filled with a well-draining seed mix. Spearmint requires well-draining and fertile soil and ensure the pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. Wait until the last frost has passed before planting spearmint seeds directly in the garden. Plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in well-prepared soil. Mint seeds require consistently wet and warm soil, approximately 20°C. By regularly pruning your spearmint, it encourages a more bushier growth preventing it from getting too leggy. Spearmint is a perennial, and in many climates, it will survive winter and come back in spring. Mulch around the base of the plant to protect it during colder months.
